Costco creates bad drivers

Or so I have to assume.

I just got back from a shopping trip to Costco. The store was packed, probably with people shopping early to avoid the heat (predicted high of 100 degrees or more today), and as usual, I was astonished at how many people do things with their shopping carts that they wouldn't do in their cars. Driving on the wrong side of the aisle. Leaving their carts across the middle of the traffic flow while they wander off to find something on the shelves. Stopping to chat or eat free samples, with their carts sticking out into the flow.

To be fair, it's not just Costco. I see the same thing in the regular supermarket, where I'll be going in a couple of hours. Interestingly, it's almost always women who do these things. Male shoppers seem to drive their carts much more rationally. I expect some disagreement with that statement.

Maybe it's not the carts that do that to people. You do see the equivalent strange behavior when people are driving cars, so maybe the dangerous cart drivers I'm complaining about are actually the same people I have to watch out for while driving my car in Denver.

No Costco here but we do have Sams and I gotta agree with you. It is a crazy place especially on Saturdays.

Hee hee...
Not me!

Surely!

That was so not me hogging the cereal aisle with the boys bouncing between panda corn flakes or gorilla niblets.

I will be the first to admit that my wife is a far better, far more responsible driver than I am, both of cars and of shopping carts. Of course, my wife was never arrested as she was about to bomb a shopping cart off the top of a 50+-foot-tall steel framework electrical tower carrying a 275,000 volt circuit, so her relative responsibility should be self-evident.

That incident of my past pretty much sums up the difference between men and women. Most men read that and probably thought "cool!" while most women reading that thought something along the lines of "Why in the world...?"

Dave Barry would love that story.

True, my reaction was, "Cool!" My wife would say, "That's ridiculous!"

Oh, and that's just the Readers' Digest version. A slightly longer version (but still not the full version, which must be told verbally to be fully appreciated) is here. And doing the math, either I was 14, or my brother was 20. I think the former. The 15/19 math listed in the story doesn't work out, as my brother is 5 1/2 years older than I am.

Ah, now I remember reading that post. Cool! Too bad about Idiot Dad.

I remember noticing that Malkin and her kind have only sneers for the victims. They're all heart.
