Laid off!

At 11 a.m. this morning. Right after we decided it was safe to spend lots of money on the house, etc.

I was hoping I'd finally found a place I could stay till retirement and not have to go through this shit again. Grump.

  1. Aargh. I'm sorry.

Dinner is on us this weekend.

  2. Yeah, great suckitude.

I don't know the total number of people let go ("Run free, little ex-employee!"), but I do know that the documentation group went from 4 down to 1. I don't envy that 1.

  3. Ouch.

I can't help but suspect that Number One will soon have nothing to document.

  4. Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if the company gets bought for pennies by IBM or Microsoft, or dismembered between the two.

Back in the 90s, Quark made an offer to buy Adobe. Oh, the irony!

  5. Ugh. Sorry to hear it, David. Just happened to a member of my family, too.

  6. Wow. Major, major suckitude, indeed. Sorry to hear it -- right now, I'm hanging my my fingernails myself...

  7. I had no idea, Chris. I assumed you were safe, for no logical reason. Good luck.

  8. Thanks, David -- good luck to you as well!

(And "hanging my my fingernails"? I should really proofread these damn things before I click submit.)

  9. Hah. Leonore noticed a dumb typo on my resume that's been there for the last three years. It was in the copies I've been sending out for the last two days - just great, when you're applying for a tech writer job!

  10. Ugh, horrible news. They're doing layoffs here as well, and although I've been safe so far, I harbor no illusions longer-term.

Did they at least give you a decent severance?

  11. A very puny severance. Things could get a tad hairy.
